Oldřich KULHÁNEK (Prague °1940) is one of the best known draughtsmen and graphic artists from the Czech Republic.
Several of his works have been prohibited during the communist regime because they were considered as a critic on the regime. He has even been imprisoned for this fact. You can read an excerpt of his interrogation by the police by downloading it here (pdf): ![]()
The former art magazine Arte Grafika published an article (only in Dutch) on the artist as a result of an extensive interview with him in 1988 in his studio in Prague and in which he expresses his concerns on the total lack of freedom and the oppression by the communist regime.

However, other works are more humorous (sometimes even cynical) or erotic. Several of his drawings and prints also prove his respect for important artists, composers, writers, painters and are a hommage to them. He is also known as a painter and an illustrator and he created many ex-libris. He has been honoured with many international prizes. His works have been shown worldwide.
Absolutely nobody could imagine in that time that the unbelievable would happen a few years later: the fall of the communist dictatorship.
