What is the meaning of C3, C5, X2 and so on in the description of a bookplate?
|
![]() You will find these data in the description of a bookplate.
Although it is not common, you can sometimes find them also on the bookplate itself as shown alongside. These international codes refer to the techniques that have been used to create the bookplate. For exemple: C refers to the group of 'chalcography' techniques, L to 'lithography', S to 'serigraphy', X to 'xylography' etc. This character mostly is followed by a numeral defining the technique more precisely. These technical symbols have been described in detail by the FISAE. The techniques of the C-group are very laborious. Hence these bookplates are considered as more precious than other ones. The P-group contains all reproductive techniques which in general are considered of less value. |
