Which data are required on a bookplate?
|
![]() The most important information on a bookplate of course is the name of the owner of the book(plate), so the client for whom it is designed.
However, some (usually very important) artists do not want to put the client's full name but only the initials. (Read more here). There should also be the mention 'ex libris' (from the books), 'ex bibliotheca' or a similar expression, for example 'ex musicis' (from the books on music'), 'ex historicis' (from the books on history), 'ex eroticis' (from the books on erotic themes), and so on. But it happens that an (important) artist omits this information, as shown in the bookplate alongside. |

The third element of a bookplate could be an illustration.
It is not a necessary component but it transforms your bookplate into a small piece of art. It can tell something about who you are, your taste, your profession, things that are interesting you, etc. Moreover it makes your bookplate to a desirable object for other collectors who will gladly swap with you. |
